Without a long introduction and opening paragragh, let’s get straight to the point.
It is a high time
For
Review of the year.
YEAR IN REVIEW
Total number of events in 2020: 201
Out of all events 72% were digital
Out of all events 15% (31 out of 201 in total) were postponed / cancelled
Most of cancelled events (12) were supposed to happen in October
The biggest number of events originated from EU (48%) followed by North America (22%).
United Kingdom contributed with the biggest amount of events (30), followed by Germany (13).
Longest running event was: Game Carnival (57 days) followed by Gamergy (56 days) and Taipei Game Show Link B2B (24).
Busiest day of 2020 was Friday, 13th of November with 11 events happening simultaneously
Median duration of a single event in 2020 was 3 days, average 4.1 days.
If you would have decided to attend every single one event in 2020 (except those that were cancelled) it would take you:
551 working days
You would have to sacrifice 155 weekend days.
In total you would be conferencing 706 days.
I am beyond happy that we have managed to get to the end of the year 2020 without any hick-ups or losing data in the process. Daily visits are still blowing my mind and on top of that a monthly blog here on Substack was launched to help you stay informed. Game Conference Guide means a lot, it represents a very tough period for me personally, and also acts as an archive for the games industry events landscape.
The reason why I created Game Conference Guide was simple, to stay informed, which event is happening where and in which format. It is a non-profit project that I hope is helping you to choose the right event for your business whenever you visit. All the content is available free of charge to anyone and accessible on any device with all the features.
If Game Conference Guide is providing value to you, helping you to navigate in the events landscape, or you simple like it, consider supporting it on Patreon. You can get access to blog posts & discounts to events early, before everyone else.
INTRODUCING DARK MODE
Let there by dark. With one simple click. Let there be light. Works both on mobile and desktop version. Choose your own theme.
This feature has been on my list for so long, and it is finally here. Cookies will help the browser to remember the state of the website and when you return next time you will find it in your preferred color scheme. There is nothing more to say about this, it is a joy to use Game Conference Guide in dark mode especially during the long winter nights.
Massive shout-out to Marcel Klimo (Vacuumlabs), who helped me with tricky CSS.
Let me hear your thoughts!
MONTHLY UPDATE
In this update, I would like to cover very briefly the logistics at Game Conference Guide and how the events will be featured on the main page:
By the end of the year, all 2020 events from the database will be moved to a separate subpage. Reason? Not to clutter the view, not to confuse you when browsing + it didn’t make very sense to track already finished events from the past year.
The „2020“ subpage will act as an archive for all the entries and you will still have access to graphical representation of the data as well. The graphs are not going to be suspended.
Starting from early January 2021, Game Conference Guide main page will feature only events scheduled for 2021 and beyond. “Donut” graphs will start to break down the geographical data and nature of the events in 2021.
The whole transition will be done on the server side, you won’t be experiencing any down-time (I hope).
FINAL REMARKS
Game Conference Guide will be maintained also during the Holidays, but do not except any huge updates, nor additions to the database. Christmas is usually very calm for the industry in general and I am planning to take a longer break after this tough year to recharge batteries while reading and playing some games.
Thank you. Every single one of you, who reads these lines, who visited the website, who sent me updates and feedback. Thank you.
Happy new Year and Merry Christmas everyone! See you all in 2021.
Singing off,
Pavol Buday, curator of GCG
